In the excitement to begin our trip, the other doctoral
student, Desiree Cho, and I went to the teacher’s supply store to stock up on
some English print classroom “swag” goodies to bring to the host teachers at
Thomas Jefferson School (TJS).
Pre-prepared classroom materials in English are hard to come by in
Chile, so we try to bring some down with us to support the teacher’s efforts to
build bilingual print rich environments in the classrooms. Honestly, in a small
way, we hope it shows the thankfulness we have for the TJS staff in extending
classroom placements and mentorship to our students.
After much debate, I decided on a book for the library about
Louisiana, a set of life cycle charts with real photographs, many sets of “reward”
stickers, and a classroom calendar kit.
Desiree made separate selections, and we decided to divide up our booty
among our students and their teachers when we arrived at the school. It wasn’t until today when I was packing that
I realized the calendar was (appropriately) created for the Northern
Hemisphere. Since Chile is in the
Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are opposite.
After debating whether I should bring it, I decided I would and let the
teachers decide what they would like to do with the month placards. May
definitely isn’t sprouting spring flowers in Chile...
But, we can’t wait to see our TJS school family, and they
will definitely know we thought of them!
